A Christmas day in Munich

30 November 2018

Baby it’s cold outside.

And the first snow of the season has already arrived in Munich. For us, this is the beginning of Christmas – the most wonderful time of the year. Book your stay now at Ruby Lilly to dive right into Munich’s Christmas Wonderland.

We’ve put together our ideal version of a classic Christmas day in Munich that even makes a total Grinch feel a little festive. So grab your scarf, hat and gloves and make your way out there.

First stop – start your day right

The Märchenbazar is probably the most magical Christmas market in Munich and one of our favorites. It is really close to our Ruby Lilly and offers traditional Weißwurst breakfast on weekends. The ideal place to start your day in typical Bavarian style. The ‘Weißwurstfrühstück’ takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 11am until the last Weißwurst is sold. Afterwards we stroll above the market, experiencing a nostalgic circus atmosphere and getting the feeling of being part of a fairy tale.

Second Stop – Winter Wonderland

The fairy tale continues when you leave the Märchenbazar and make your way to Schloss Nymphenburg, which is not far away. The garden of the castle is one of the nicest places for a long walk in Munich. With a snow setting, the place gets even more magical. And if you’re really lucky all the canals around the castle are frozen – which means you can go ice-skating. We bet you have never been ice-skating in such a romantic atmosphere.

Third stop – I’m on a boat

Our next stop couldn’t be more different to the one before but it’s definitely worth a visit. Make your way from the west to the south of Munich. Having arrived, you might not trust your eyes if you have not been at the Alte Utting before. The Alte Utting is a traditional ship that has transported passengers at the Ammersee for more than 65 years. Last year, it was time to retire and from then, it was placed on a railroad-bridge in the heart of Sendling and is part of an exciting art project. During winter time, it becomes a winter magic ship and the scenery of a small, but special Christmas market.

After a few mulled wine at the Alte Utting, we recommend to make a short Christmas Trip. Take a ride in the Christkindltram from MVG, starting every 30 minutes from Sendlinger Tor. With mulled wine and gingerbread on board, you’ll drive 25 minutes through the inner city of Munich.

Last stop – Christmas clubbing

Ending the day in the best way possible – with good food, very good drinks and even better music. Lucky Who organizes their own kind of a Christmas market, the Nachtkindlmarkt. Everything is a bit different to normal Christmas markets, so give it a try. But don’t expect bratwurst and fries, but rather tasty pizza, Brazilian soulfood and tons of cinnamon buns. Accompanied by club beats and Christmas music, the mulled wine tastes much better than somewhere else. Luckily, the Lucky Who isn’t far from our Ruby Lilly, so after this exhausting but really Christmassy day you don’t have a long way back to snuggle yourself in your cosy, warm bed.
